ILO Director-General Mr Guy Ryder has been the first ever serving boss
to visit Zanzibar, as he drummed for the strengthening of tripartite and
setting up strategy to tackle unemployment.
At a meeting with representatives from Workers union in Zanzibar and the Islands Minister responsible for Labour and Civil Servant Mr Haroun Ali Suleiman, Ryder also Tanzania to promote the rights of domestic worker by ratifying Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189) concerning decent work for domestic workers.
“We have heard from you, and ILO will be working closely with Zanzibar to address some of the challenges it faces including support for capacity building,” said Ryder as he emphasized on tripartite.
Prior to his statement, representatives from Zanzibar Employers Association (ZANEMA), Institute of Public United Nations (IPA UN) Chapter Zanzibar, and Zanzibar Trade Union Congress (ZATUC) mentioned some of the challenges facing the organizations.
“We are happy to share views, for the first time in Zanzibar, with ILO Director General. We ask for support in capacity building and participation in ILO international conferences. It is unacceptable for Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA), to represent Zanzibar in international conferences,” said Mr Khamis Mwinyi, Secretary ZATUC
Mr Mohamed Bhaloo and Mr Salahi Saleh from ZANEMA said at the meeting held at Grand Palace Hotel in stone town that although they have been getting good cooperation from the government, “We need technical support from ILO).
Haroun, Zanzibar’s Minister for Labour and civil servants informed the ILO delegates that his office has been working well with workers and employers in strengthening the tripartite. Mr Alexio Musido, ILO Directors EAC & Rwanda was also present ay the meeting.
